I could get more...

In the last class, we had CWT, Courses Wide Test, about the argument. I had had kind of confidence, but I wasn’t able to get a good score. Anyway, it’s a good chance to review!

1. Hasty generalization
I had recognized it as a fallacy comes from limited information. However, one of my section mate told me that it especially comes from personal experiences after the test. Now I can clearly identify Hasty generalization.

2. Inductive & Deductive
Dan said that it was hard for him to identify the difference between inductive and deductive, so I’ll write about it.
Inductive means to lead a general rule from individual examples.
Deductive means to presume similar examples from one example.

Now, I’m more confident in the argument!

Red fish? No, Red herring.

In the last class, we study many kinds of fallacies. They remind me to review my essay or other writings. Red herring, which means to change a focus slightly as the sentences go on, is the most impressive, because I sometimes do it. I have lots of things I want to say in my mind, so I often allow them to flow out freely. I KNOW, I know that I have to narrow contents and construct them well, yet I notice I did when I review my writing. The class remembers me the importance of outline. Actually, I seldom made it before, so I’ll make use of it from now on.

I was talking about Red herring, but I might have made other fallacies unconsciously either. I’ll keep the fallacies list in mind, and pick it up when I review the essay.

Soak Yourself in Writings

Before I entered the university, my reading was just to find the main ideas or important information. However, this is not in case in university. As we read academic writings, we have to read them carefully.

In the last class, we analyzed one essay about death penalty. I could only indicate one improvable point before the class, so I thought I need to practice to analyze more. Especially, I need to communicate deeply with a writer when I read a writing. I think that the more I’m involved in a content, the better I analyze it. I’ll continue to practice!

Be Calm and Write the Essay!

I'm struggling for the good essay. I enjoy to search for my evidences, but I'm bothered with how to construct them. I want to make the well-organized and convensing essay, so I've wanted to change my outline many times. Dan and peer editors, forgive me. There are many things to consider. For instance, in last class, Dan said that we should use be verb in claim sentences. After class, I fixed my sentence soon because I felt that using be verbs is more persuasive.

According to videos Dan sent us, I found some useful tips. The most impressive one is evidence should be accurate, relevant, representative, adequate. I sometimes lose the objective eyes, yet I must step back from evidences I found.

My another brain : Evernote

http://goo.gl/uvz4Sj

Since I’ve started to use 3 devices; PC, iPhone, iPad mini, I’m using Evernote because I want one notebook in which I can accumulate tips from the Internet with any devices. Before I use it, I used to write those tips on paper and paste it on a wall. It was also great because I can focus on several tips due to the limitation of the wall. However, now I can search any tips I found with Evernote from any devices. Moreover hearing Dan, I knew that I can clip a whole page of websites with Evernote. This function is so nice because I don’t have to copy and paste its contents, and also links on the page function as original one.

I think that I’ll use Evernote for my essays or hobbies unless I would find a better notebook.

Drafting Tip

http://goo.gl/0uozWq

The most attractive tip for drafting is to put “?” where I’m not sure what to write. I’ve already encountered that situation, but I’ve stopped typing every time. Knowing this tip, I think my action might have stopped my flowing ideas. From now on, I’ll try to use this tip to write my essay.

A Perfect Answer

In the last class, we checked the CWT, Course Wide Test, of another section. When I was doing so, one of my section mate said “This answer is perfect.” After I’ve done my duty, I read that perfect answer. In fact, there were no grammatical mistakes for me, and also it had a good content and a well-structured paragraph. It seemed a perfect answer for me, but I had one doubt; he or she might have made this answer before the test and remembered it. It is absolutely true that studies of the test is crucial and inevitable as Dan recommended us to practice writing answers. However, I can’t be for remembering the answer because this study is inconsistent with what Meiland says. He says that the intellectual works of university is not to remember beliefs, but to examine and evaluate them. I think it is necessary to brainstorm and construct answers for CWT, but it is less valuable to remember every word of answers.
