I could get more...

In the last class, we had CWT, Courses Wide Test, about the argument. I had had kind of confidence, but I wasn’t able to get a good score. Anyway, it’s a good chance to review!

1. Hasty generalization
I had recognized it as a fallacy comes from limited information. However, one of my section mate told me that it especially comes from personal experiences after the test. Now I can clearly identify Hasty generalization.

2. Inductive & Deductive
Dan said that it was hard for him to identify the difference between inductive and deductive, so I’ll write about it.
Inductive means to lead a general rule from individual examples.
Deductive means to presume similar examples from one example.

Now, I’m more confident in the argument!

Red fish? No, Red herring.

In the last class, we study many kinds of fallacies. They remind me to review my essay or other writings. Red herring, which means to change a focus slightly as the sentences go on, is the most impressive, because I sometimes do it. I have lots of things I want to say in my mind, so I often allow them to flow out freely. I KNOW, I know that I have to narrow contents and construct them well, yet I notice I did when I review my writing. The class remembers me the importance of outline. Actually, I seldom made it before, so I’ll make use of it from now on.

I was talking about Red herring, but I might have made other fallacies unconsciously either. I’ll keep the fallacies list in mind, and pick it up when I review the essay.

Soak Yourself in Writings

Before I entered the university, my reading was just to find the main ideas or important information. However, this is not in case in university. As we read academic writings, we have to read them carefully.

In the last class, we analyzed one essay about death penalty. I could only indicate one improvable point before the class, so I thought I need to practice to analyze more. Especially, I need to communicate deeply with a writer when I read a writing. I think that the more I’m involved in a content, the better I analyze it. I’ll continue to practice!

Be Calm and Write the Essay!

I'm struggling for the good essay. I enjoy to search for my evidences, but I'm bothered with how to construct them. I want to make the well-organized and convensing essay, so I've wanted to change my outline many times. Dan and peer editors, forgive me. There are many things to consider. For instance, in last class, Dan said that we should use be verb in claim sentences. After class, I fixed my sentence soon because I felt that using be verbs is more persuasive.

According to videos Dan sent us, I found some useful tips. The most impressive one is evidence should be accurate, relevant, representative, adequate. I sometimes lose the objective eyes, yet I must step back from evidences I found.

My another brain : Evernote

http://goo.gl/uvz4Sj

Since I’ve started to use 3 devices; PC, iPhone, iPad mini, I’m using Evernote because I want one notebook in which I can accumulate tips from the Internet with any devices. Before I use it, I used to write those tips on paper and paste it on a wall. It was also great because I can focus on several tips due to the limitation of the wall. However, now I can search any tips I found with Evernote from any devices. Moreover hearing Dan, I knew that I can clip a whole page of websites with Evernote. This function is so nice because I don’t have to copy and paste its contents, and also links on the page function as original one.

I think that I’ll use Evernote for my essays or hobbies unless I would find a better notebook.

Drafting Tip

http://goo.gl/0uozWq

The most attractive tip for drafting is to put “?” where I’m not sure what to write. I’ve already encountered that situation, but I’ve stopped typing every time. Knowing this tip, I think my action might have stopped my flowing ideas. From now on, I’ll try to use this tip to write my essay.

A Perfect Answer

In the last class, we checked the CWT, Course Wide Test, of another section. When I was doing so, one of my section mate said “This answer is perfect.” After I’ve done my duty, I read that perfect answer. In fact, there were no grammatical mistakes for me, and also it had a good content and a well-structured paragraph. It seemed a perfect answer for me, but I had one doubt; he or she might have made this answer before the test and remembered it. It is absolutely true that studies of the test is crucial and inevitable as Dan recommended us to practice writing answers. However, I can’t be for remembering the answer because this study is inconsistent with what Meiland says. He says that the intellectual works of university is not to remember beliefs, but to examine and evaluate them. I think it is necessary to brainstorm and construct answers for CWT, but it is less valuable to remember every word of answers.

Let’s move on to the essay work!

http://goo.gl/Bzi7I8

In last class, we analyzed Johnny Tanaka’s essay. From the activity, I learned 3 kinds of evidence which I can support my claim in essays. They are statistic, expert opinion, and example. He told us that example is likely a personal and weak evidence, so we cannot use it as the 1st evidence. Also the combination of them is the best. These are amazingly useful to write my essay. I’ll be eager to follow them.
Well, what will I write for my 1st essay? I plan to write about “locavorism”. Do you know what it is? It is a food system in which people eat produce grown locally. It is unfortunate that Japanese farmers decease in its number, so I somehow want to show the profits of “locavorism” which I believe is beneficial for Japanese agriculture.

The video Dan sent us was about prewriting tips. The video shows that we should cluster or freewrite everything which we come up with from the huge topic. These process help us to find a narrower topic. After that, we should think and search for WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHY, and WHERE about the topic. It’ll lend a hand to arrange the essay. I’m not sure it’ll work well, but I’ll just try it because I’ve been not good at make arranged writings.

Banana Movement

Daniel Alves (FC Barcelona) ate the banana which was thrown by a supporter who insulted him for the race. This event generated the banana movement in which people eat banana to show that they criticize the ethnic discrimination.
That’ good. Many people remembered the importance of racial equality, and showed that they supported it as a global citizen. …That’s all.
Does this movement encourage people who are suffering from the discrimination? I don’t think so. I know that it is better than ignorance, but nothing will be resolved unless we touch and have personal relationships with those people like bullying. I don’t think this is a bad action, yet I felt that they merely become intoxicated with them who conduct the justice. There might be some people who make the movement to be a trigger for a revolution, though.
Also, personally speaking, I dislike the idea that everybody acts the same.

People would forget it as easy as numerous commercial movements.

I’ve been Dreaming to …

My bucket list

CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

-To travel around France and live somewhere
-To be a trilingual
-To get married with the one.

I hardly have ambitions, but I have some wishes.
First, I want to live in France. I’ve lived in France when I was a little, so I tend to find my origin there. Anyway, I love its atmosphere. Of course, each city and town has a distinct feature, so I’ll decide where to live after travelling around. I have no idea whether I could realize it or not, but I’ll be constructing my career to make my wish come true. Also, to live in France, I have to speak French. I’ll study French, and then be a trilingual (Japanese, English, and French). I can do that because I have the purpose, and also there’re my friends who want to learn French and who is good at it. Finally, I want to marry the one before I die. Love is essential in our life, especially for me. I’ve been supported by lots of love, so I feel I have to provide it for someone. I’ll give it to everybody, but I need the one who I’ll be loving and respecting despite of some difficulties. My ideal is to walk hand in hand when we get old.

PS.

In last class, Dan told us that we should ask questions because many of classmates have questions. I know that, yeah I know that! However, I sometimes hesitate to do that. I care too much about what other people think. Well, I’ll try. Also, I've found an article which might make you not to care too much about what other people think. Here’s a link. Netiquette

Living in the world, we always follow some etiquette. Parents, teachers, or somebody have told us the etiquette, and then we've learned it. We would be in some troubles if we made mistakes, so the etiquette is crucial to live well in the social community. Similarly, there’s the etiquette in the Internet. It is Netiquette. If we made mistakes, we would be in more serious troubles because the Internet is not face-to-face communication in which feelings are directly conveyed. There’re less opportunities to learn Netiquette, so let’s talk about it.
In my opinion, the important Netiquette is below.

1. Do not slander others.
2. Do not write unclear matters.
3. Do not upload pictures which others appear in.

First, you can write anything on the Internet by yourself, so you must pay attentions what you write and consider how other people feel when they read it. It’s not clever to write somebody’s slanders because you may just upset at that time. Once you write something on the Internet, it will exist nearly forever. Your temporary feeling will blame someone forever. Also, you mustn't write unclear matters for the same reason. Your temporary irresponsibility will puzzle someone forever. Finally, anyone can see the Internet, so uploaded pictures are public. There might someone who do not want to be exposed to the world in your pictures. You should check them before you upload pictures, or you have to cut off others from your pictures.

Now, I’m one of who express oneself on the Internet. I’ll follow Netiquette, and live on the Internet as well as in the society.

What is Gogatsu-Byo

In general, Gogatsu-Byo is a physical and mental weariness which people (especially new comers) suffer from after the Golden Week. It’s mainly caused by 2 reasons. First, they enjoyed too much the Golden Week to come back to their works. Many people go on trips during the week, but the week is not so long, so some people can’t fully recover their weekday sense. Second, physical and mental fatigue which they have had during April comes out. For the first month, they rarely become sick even if they’re afflicted by new environment, new works, and new relationships because they’re very busy to carry out them. However, this fatigue comes out as sickness when they’re set free from those new things.
Talking about ICU freshman students, their Gogastu-Byo may appear after the Retreat. I guess that this is a big event, so some people will be enthusiastic for it, and then lose their energy after it. Seniors said that they enjoyed the Retreat and hardly slept. I wonder that the Retreat will be enjoyable, but I recommend students to sleep well at night.

Honestly speaking, I have many things to study, so I’m too busy to suffer from mental Gogatsu-Byo. It may be a good point to be an ICU student.
